I must say now that I did not see the original episode about the Gravedigger, although I had heard that Booth rescued Brennan from being buried alive at some point. Because I am a new Bones watcher, I also did not know Bones had a father present in her life. But, after meeting him, I thought Max was pretty cool.
The emotional impact of this episode’s case on the characters, especially Bones, seemed very important to the storyline, but for what reason I don’t yet know. Most of the characters confronted some emotions that had been getting the best of them recently and by the end of the episode, they were able to find closure in the fact that the Gravedigger wouldn’t be on the loose anymore. Brennan especially (although she didn’t acknowledge her feelings for Booth) was upset by the trial, although she tries to suppress these emotions that come as a result of these experiences. She still has nightmares but denies this early in the episode in an attempt to remain objective as an investigator in the case so that she can continue her best work. This façade, however, falls apart at Hodgins’ accusation that she does not care about letting her case drop, at which point she says with conviction "I will never forget what happened to us, to Booth, to this boy." As we see hber struggling with the case, she admits to Booth that she’s getting ‘tired’ of dead bodies, truly indicating that she’s really been considering her emotions. She even is willing to snuggle with Booth as comfort at one point (*SIGH). Although she has not yet made a decision, it is clear that Booth doesn’t want her to go. Here’s hoping this problem is resolved in the finale. Some more doubts from Brennan that have us questioning their future together:
- "I have the sense that everything's changing, Booth."
- "I might need more than a little time."
And, the Gravedigger was put in jail even though it seemed uncertain at some points. Even Max was willing to kill her because he had so little faith in the justice system. And Booth catching him was awesome… "When are you gonna learn not to mess with me?"
